WWDC Quick Review
so quickly. nothing that exciting. they have updated all their laptops and made them greener and increased battery life (overall theme of presentation).
new mac software, dubbed snow leopard, will have a lot of great features and still be the best operating system out there - doesn’t crash, basically invulnerable to attacks, to spyware, etc.(even as they scale) also, only $29 for folks who have an intel mac (anything made by them since 2004) and $129 for others - still significantly cheaper than Microsoft XP, VISTA)
iPhone OS (operating system) will be updated on June 17th. It will be free for existing iPhone people and $9.95 for iTouch folks. Lots of new features include, cut and paste, voice features, turn by turn maps through tom tom, etc.
iphone 3GS - is the new hardware and it has a better camera, can take video and is faster. Faster in terms of processor speed - just like how a computer becomes faster each year, so does / will the iphone. programs will open faster.
the current 8gb 3g phone is now only $99
the new 16gb 3GS will be $199 and the 32GB will be $299.
drawbacks are that ATT has really limited the potential of the phone in the US b/c of infrastructure. to send mms (text messages with video or pictures) will be more $ and won’t be ready until September = boo.
Also, tethering. This is a big thing here. Tethering allows you to use your phones 3g connection as an internet connection for your computer. For example, you’re at the airport and don’t want to pay for the wifi. Well, you can connect your phone and laptop and use the phone’s connection! ATT can’t do that yet & they want to make more money and charge. It will be available in Canada and most of Europe as part of a data plan.
So that’s basically the write up. I’m sure there will be more coming out when people have time to digest and dissect. Apple and att will also want to correct anything that may have been misinterpreted.
If you have the 3G, there is no need to rush out and get the 3GS on the 19th. That said, apple did not say how it would be sold. Only that the new hardware would ship with the new OS. Hopefully you won’t have to camp out at the local apple store or heaven forbid, the local attws store!
